I’ve read some comments made by fellow photographers pertaining to this workshop. There is some heated discussion especially on the fee imposed by the organiser. Some have said, rather than paying $450 for the workshop, with that amount he would rather invest on new lenses, and some also said that he’s not going into PRO, and many more.

I somehow feel upset with this kind of thinking, especially coming from friends and fellow photographers. In this entry I would like to share my view to all photo enthusiasts.

Every photographer wants to be the better and the best. No one wants to be stagnant with no progress at all. However, investment in photography is not limited to equipment only, but also in workshops, international salons and such. Attending workshops and talks, as with all other professions, will give you more exposure, knowledge, tips & skills that will help you in producing better images and other things that relates to photography. It is a shame to only have good cameras & thingamagics when you’re unable to exploit that to the best possible way.

During my early days in photography, I traveled frequently to Singapore to join a club, “Singapore Photo Arts“, in their outings. Eventhough it did cost a hefty buck, I don’t mind spending money for a activity that I love. My mentor was Encik Junid Osnam Al-Hajj. At that time I was using Nikon F100 on positive film, and everytime I saw the other members with expensive gadgets, like Nikon F5, Mamiya, Hasselblad or Leica, I excitedly point that to Encik Junid. However, humble Encik Junid said, “aku tak nak tengok camera dier Ahim, aku nak tengok gambar dier”.

When I was the Vice President of GemilangFoto, there will always be problems when it comes to “paid outing”. It was either the turn-up was less or some didn’t pay at all (may be they’ve forgotten). I do not know whether our society here is not ready for any activity that involves payment? Or may be the generation have been spoilt by the subsidy concepts being practiced by the government. Free School, Free Medical Bills. All free. Even paying $1.00 for entry to Jerudong Park, some would rather opt to U-turn.

My point here is “Hendak Seribu Daya, Tak Hendak Seribu Daleh“. If you want to improve yourself, then there’s no harm in investing. Find a Mentor (OTAI) that can guide you, that can criticize your works. Another great way is to join any Photography Workshops, whether “Free” or “Paid”. But we cannot depend too much on “Free” sources. As everyone knows only too well, “photography is not cheap”.

Not only the photography has value, the time spent producing those images are also of great value. Don’t depend on other people to share what they gained from a workshop. Learning from 1^st hand experience is different. I myself also flew to Kuala Lumpur to join some workshops, these includes talks by Saiful Nang.

How good is Saiful Nang in his talk? I can’t comment. Trying not to be biased, I would like to direct you all HERE click HERE. There are a barge of comments made by a number of people who had attended his talks and you can judge by yourself.

Please be reminded that there are talks or workshops with a fee of RM700. It was full-house. For them, RM700 is the same value of BND700 if they lived in Brunei. If your clients without hesitation pays you B$700-B$1,500 for their lifetime memorable wedding photos, why can’t you pay or invest B$450 for the lifetime & priceless knowledge that may improve your photo works.

I once dreamt, if she (the so called my mom’s “anak buah”) is getting married, I wanted to be her wedding photographer. And “yes” it’s only a dream that didn’t come true,HaHaHa!  Managed to sneak in to the dressing room, and wow!!  What a stunning dress, designed by Rusly Tjohnardi of Adeys Designer, Jakarta. Rusly also flew in to the country for the bride’s make-up.

Lapan bulan yang lalu CS Brunei di awal penubuhan nya telah diberi kepercayaan untuk menjadi jurugambar rasmi & peribadi bagi satu acara yang terbesar iaitu Istiadat Perkahwinan DiRaja di antara Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Majeedah Nuurul Bulqiah binti Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, D.K.M.B., P.H.B.S dengan Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Khairul Khalil bin Pengiran Syed Haji Jaafari. Pada ketika itu tenaga kerja CS Brunei hanyalah berbekalkan dengan tenaga 2 orang jurugambar sahaja iaitu Ahim Rani dan Adi-Putera. Untuk membuat liputan istiadat terbesar ini, tenaga dari 2 orang jurugambar mungkin tak akan terungkayah, oleh itu CS Brunei telah meminta bantuan dari CS Malaysia bagi menghantar 3 orang jurugambar dan 1 orang pereka grafik yang diketuai oleh pengasas nya Saiful Nang bagi memantapkan lagi tenaga kerja yang sedia ada. Dan hasil nya gabungan antara dua negara ini telah menyaksikan satu teamwork yg luar biasa dan sangat mengagumkan.

Berbekalkan pengalaman yang dilalui lapan bulan yang lalu, sekali lagi gabungan kerja dari CS di kedua Negara ini diaktifkan kembali bagi merakam majlis perkahwinan selebriti terkenal Malaysia.

CandidSyndrome telahpun menjadi pilihan rasmi Ning Baizura sendiri setelah diperkenalkan oleh seorang pereka tersohor Malaysia, Jovian Mandagie. Ning dan Chris berpendapat, gambar CS ada magik yang boleh buat orang menangis, ketawa, bersedih dan ceria. Dengan itu, beliau secara rasminya melantik CS sebagai jurugambar rasmi tunggal beliau kira-kira 6 bulan lepas.

Untuk Majlis Perkahwinan Ning, CS Brunei yang diketuai oleh Ahim Rani besama-sama 2 orang associates nya (Hairol & Syafie) memperkuatkan lagi team seramai 10 orang termasuk 2 orang junior photographers dari CS Malaysia. Hanya pada majlis-majlis besar sebegini, bilangan jurugambar dapat membantu dalam memberikan kepelbagaian sudut fotografi. Tetapi, cabarannya ialah…TEAMWORK SPIRIT. Ramai orang ambil gambar dan berkehendakkan gambar yg terbaik untuk diri sendiri. Tapi tidak dalam team. Koordinasi adalah sepenting coreografi & juga konduktor okestra. Seperti okestra, setiap pemain sudah hebat dengan skill masing2 tetapi konductor perlu ada untuk menguruskan menjadi satu susunan musik yang terbaik. Fotografi team juga begitu. Dalam cabaran ini, disiplin sangat lah kritikal.

Sekarang, CS Brunei telah mempunyai team yang kuat, bertulang-belakangkan jurugambar tempatan. Di samping menerima tempahan bagi acara Perkahwinan Melayu, CS Brunei juga menerima tempahan bagi Majlis Perkahwinan mesyarakat Tiong Hua dan bangsa-bangsa yang lain.

Aksi rempit Chris & Ning dengan Vespa Piagio buatan Italy yang telah berumur tak kurang 30 tahun merupakan scene yang terlama pernah dibuat dan ianya hanya dengan 2 kali percubaan sahaja. Untuk mendapatan shot terbaik, ada diantara fotografer sampai meniarap di atas jalan berdebu. Pada musim wedding Ning ini, CandidSyndrome Malaysia akan berganding tenaga dengan CandidSyndrome Brunei untuk merakamkan detik2 persiapan dan detik2 gemilang perkahwinan Ning & Chris.
